About the Holme Valley and the local Labour Party branch

The Holme Valley and its People

view of Holme ValleyThe Holme Valley lies in the rugged and beautiful Pennine hills, in the south west corner of West Yorkshire within the Colne Valley Parliamentary Constituency of our M.P., the Labour Member Kali Mountford, and is a great favourite with walkers (and film crews).

The small town of Holmfirth and its surrounding villages and hamlets have their roots in the textile industry, with mills and weavers’ cottages throughout the valley as evidence of its vigorous industrial past. Today there is a strong emphasis on the arts and music, and the Valley boasts theatres, band rooms, a museum, many artists' galleries and studios.

Holmfirth hosts a renowned Art Exhibition and Folk Festival and there are other music festivals each year around the Valley. Many villages have their own annual shows and galas. There is a strong co-operative tradition, with many co-op stores, one of the most interesting of which is the original Wooldale Co-operative (pictured below).

The local Labour Party branch

Weavers cottagesHolme Valley South Labour Party is over 100 years old and is still going strong. Local party members take part in a wide range of community activities; sitting on local councils, school governing bodies and community groups.

We campaign on a variety of issues, supporting rural services, public transport, post offices, schools and health services. We are keen to preserve the Valley’s heritage while encouraging local industry and affordable homes for all.

How to make your own contribution

Wooldale co-op storeWe actively welcome new members. Even if you work outside the Valley and think of it only as a place to come home to, you can still make a contribution to the life of the community.

There are lots of opportunities to get involved - the website gives full details of how to contact us and start to make a difference.
